This site was created by a group of Vincent van Gogh's creative work fans from non-English-speaking country.

One quite often encounters unclear or unknown words in Vincent vah Gogh's letters - words that are rather typical of correspondence in van Gogh's time. These could be geographical or personal names, terms of art or simply DutchDutch. The adjective "Dutch" refers to everything connected to the Netherlands, its people, language or culture. The noun "Dutch" refers either to people inhabiting or originating from the Netherlands, or to the main language of the Netherlands...

Nothing but mere interest propelled our work in the beginning but we have gradually created a whole dictionary, a glossary of terms related to the life and the time of Vincent van Gogh. This dictionary is still being ceaselessly elaborated: we permanently revise, expand and advance it.

We saw a way and managed to publish it and to create a special Web-site. For your convenience's sake we've designed it in a following way: all the dictionary entries are underlined with dotted lines right in the text of a letter so you can read a definition without leaving the page.
